I'm fond of the old LucasArts adventure games, and two of them hold a special place in my heart: Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle.

A few years ago they got remasters from a studio founded by the creator of the originals, Tim Schafer — good remasters; you can switch to the original with one key, for instance. They also threw in bonus material, art included.

I ripped it out of the game files, tidied it up a bit (I'm more used to looking at PDFs) and I'm sharing it here. Besides everything else, the two games share a lead artist: Peter Chan. He also worked on Monkey Island 2 and Grim Fandango. In '95 he went freelance, into the film industry, and helped LucasArts from outside the payroll.

The old school of game developers had no clear role boundaries; you could call Chan a concept artist, a background lead and, in places, an art director. And LucasArts at the start of the nineties was a small, experimental company by today's standards.

Few modern games can boast that much traditional drawing during development: actual pencil, watercolour, markers. Digital gradually squeezed it all out in the name of speed, but I'm delighted every time I see the old techniques.
